Budget Management: A UX Case Study
Project Overview
Designing a seamless budget management experience for organizations using multiple cloud providers. The case study focuses on solving the challenges of tracking, allocating, and controlling cloud spend across platforms.
Introduction
With the growing adoption of cloud services, organizations increasingly use multiple cloud providers for redundancy, cost optimization, and leveraging unique features. This brings challenges in tracking and managing budgets across providers.
Problem Statement
DevOps Managers need to accurately forecast and allocate cloud budgets in multi-cloud environments, but projections often miss critical factors, making budget management difficult.
Goal
Design user experience for technical personas (FinOps/DevOps Managers/CTO) to create, track, and understand budgets for multiple cloud platforms.
Understanding and Research
Interviews with clients revealed the need for clarity on budget health, customizable alerts, and access to trends for informed decisions.
Initial Learning
- No clarity on budget health status
- Need for customizable thresholds for alerts
- Trends help stakeholders make decisions
Ideation Process
Mapped user flows, sketched layouts, and identified core features. Split features into two main sections to address user goals and pain points.
Design Iteration 1
Delivered a dashboard to display current spending, create budgets, and configure alerts. Easy-to-read graphs and pre-set alerts help users assess budget health.
Design Iteration 2
Updated design for multi-cloud support, improved budget period display, dynamic preview section, and refined alert configuration.
Business Impact
- Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR) increased by 11–13%
- Adoption rate increased with new and existing customers
- Task success rate reached 86%, above industry benchmark
Outcomes & Takeaways
Combining creativity with practicality to meet user needs. Key insights gained through research, iteration, and feedback.
